A DEDICATED fundraiser for the RNLI has retired after raising over £16,000 for the life-saving charity.

Judith Hodgson, from Seaton, is hanging up her money-raising hat after three years in the role of Workington station’s Betty’s Pots Organiser.

The money-making venture was first created by Hertford branch treasurer Betty Frith, who suggested people collect five-pence-pieces in small jam pots for the RNLI.

The genius scheme was rolled out in May 2014, and caught on throughout the branches, with Workington RNLI raising £16,648 under Judith’s supervision.

Being an active committee member of the RNLI for five years, the “committed volunteer” first set up Betty’s Pots at the charity’s Workington station three years ago, and got together with local shops and other venues to host the pots, and collected them when they were full.

Judith’s hard work also included sourcing the mini jam jars, labelling, distributing and collecting them, and counting each and every coin in the pots.

The committee are extremely grateful for her participation over the years, and presented Judith with flowers and garden vouchers at Workington RNLI Fundraisers’ annual lunch at Hunday Manor, Workington, to thank her for her service.

Alayne Cowling will take over the role of Betty’s Pots Organiser, and “although it’s challenging, is looking forward to carrying on Judith’s hard work”.

Workington RNLI Fundraisers committee member Janet McKay spoke about the much-loved volunteer, and said: “Judith has been a dedicated and committed volunteer, and is commended for her efforts.

“In her time in this role she has collected an amazing amount! Her hard work has helped to raise the RNLI’s profile, and secured a steady funding stream.

“We all hope she has a long and happy retirement.”

It costs £155,000 to operate Workington RNLI station each year, so fundraising is vital for the charity.
