Climate activists will be gathering in Cockermouth tomorrow as part of what is expected to be the world’s biggest climate demonstration.

Everyone is invited to join the Global Climate Strike on Main Street.

The event, one of more than 2,500 globally and 150 nationally, comes three days before the United Nation’s Climate Action Summit in New York.

This is the fifth strike organised in Cockermouth. Cockermouth School pupil and UK Student Climate Network (UKSCN) member Clare Rodger has been involved in them from the beginning.

“For the first time since the demonstrations began in February, UKSCN is calling on parents, businesses, working people and politicians alike to get behind the strikers and demand urgent action on the climate crisis,” said Clare.

“Those taking part in the action are demanding that the government puts in place policy measures to implement a Green New Deal, declares a state of climate emergency and communicates the severity of the ecological crisis to the general public.

“Additionally, campaigners want the education system reformed to address climate change as an educational priority, alongside a request to include youth voices in policy making and lowering the voting age to 16.”

The protest will take place from 9am to 1pm, when people will move to the Kirkgate Centre for various activities including speeches, poetry and crafts.

Clare attended a youth climate conference in Switzerland in the summer.
