Two libraries in Allerdale will host talks to mark Black History Month.
Author Ray Greenhow will give a talk at Workington Library, while Marcia Reid-Fotheringham, High Sheriff of Cumbria, will speak at Maryport Library.
Ray Greenhow is an ex-police officer, who wrote Britain's First Black Policeman, The Life of John Kent A Police Officer in Cumberland 1835 – 184.
He will discuss the fascinating life of Britain’s first black police officer, who was the son of a freed slave and served communities of Maryport and Longtown.
Marcia Reid-Fotheringham is only the third black person to be High Sheriff in England and Wales. She will be explaining her interesting career and background.
This tradition goes back 1,000 years and the High Sheriff is the oldest secular officer under the Crown.
The talk at Workington Library takes place on Wednesday, October 23, at 6.30pm. The Maryport even is being held on Saturday, October 26, at 3pm.
To book on to the free events, call Workington Library on 01900 706170 or Maryport Library on 01900 812384.
