A WOMAN has sustained serious injuries after a collision which closed a busy Cumbrian road.

Officers were called at about 11.48am following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Victoria Road, Penrith.

The 77-year-old pedestrian was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where she is said to be in a "serious condition".

The car involved was an Alfa Romeo, driven by a woman, 46, of Penrith.

Closures were put in place southbound at Roper Street and northbound at Kemplay Bank roundabout, with motorists being advised to avoid the area. These have since been lifted.
