NOW is the chance for the Windermere ferry to make back a bit of the money it loses through breakdowns and services etc.
Why not keep it running until 1am, until November 18? This would greatly reduce the 40-mile-plus diversion suggested for motorists (Gazette, October 17, 'Road closure sparks anger').
From Windermere to Ambleside, via the ferry at Hawkshead, is about 12 miles.
