KENDAL Leisure Centre hosted the second workplace netball tournament which saw five teams battle it out over four hours.

The Kendal competition followed the success of a similar tournament in Carlisle in September.

Stephanie Hastwell, who is leading the initiative for England Netball, said a more formal workplace league was likely to be set up in Cumbria following the events. "It's been great to see so many workplace teams compete in these competitions," she said.

Angela Barnes, senior associate solicitor at Napthens in Kendal, said the team were delighted to take part.

"The tournament was really enjoyable and a great opportunity to meet with other professionals in our local area. Certainly not your typical networking event," she said.

"Only one player in our team regularly plays netball, while the rest of the team haven’t played in years (some not since school). We’d forgotten how much fun netball can be. The tournament was really well organised and we hope England Netball are planning more Cumbrian events in the future.”

The Alertacall Ltd team entered both the Carlisle and Kendal tournaments. The firm's Jo Webb said: ""Our company Alertacall in Windermere has really benefited from playing netball; it's fun, it keeps us fit and we get to see different sides to our team members. By helping to organise and run some games in Windermere we've also met loads of other great people and had a chance to help the community too.

"The tournaments set up by England Netball have been very enjoyable and brought out our competitive side! We were very pleased by our silver medal at the tournament in Kendal and it was great to see so many other teams from other local businesses participate."

Winners of the Kendal tournament were Napthens, with Alertacall in second place. Also taking part were South Lakes Housing, GLL and Amphigean.
