AGE UK West Cumbria have made a plea to the public for donations instead of sending Christmas cards this year.

A representative of Age UK West Cumbria said: “At a time of year when many older people struggle, Age UK West Cumbria are encouraging people to ditch the unnecessary cards and donate the money to their charity instead.”

Donations to Age UK West Cumbria contribute to services that help the people of Copeland in later life.

The plea coincides with the charity’s Winter Warmth Grants for older people in Cumbria who are at risk in cold weather.

Age UK West Cumbria are working with Cumbria Community Foundation to issue Winter Warmth Grants available to anyone in Copeland and Allerdale aged 60 and over.

The only conditions are that they receive pension credit and struggle in the winter.

Age UK West Cumbria have also issued information to people who may struggle in colder weather.

They are advising people to wrap up with a throw or blanket, wear more clothes in bed, try using an electric blanket or hot water bottle and get to know their thermostat.

The charity are also advising people to draw their curtains at night, keep radiators clear and seek help with fuel bills under the Winter Warmth campaign if they need it.
