SCHOOLS that go the extra mile to encourage pupils to be global citizens with respect for different cultures have been celebrated.

Twelve schools from across County Durham were honoured at Durham Town Hall as part of the International School Awards.

At the ceremony, attendees heard how schools host pupil exchanges with countries all over the world, including Spain, Finland, France, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Many also have partner schools in countries such as Kenya and Sri Lanka and collaborate on projects focusing on a range of issues.

Brian Stobie, international officer at Durham County Council, said: β€œIt’s so important children learn about different countries.”
