A YOUNG woman with a caring nature has been named as Derwentside College’s Student of the Year at an annual awards night.

Lauren Wilkinson, from Stanley, also received an award for Excellence in Health and Social Care.

Miss Wilkinson has gained experience by volunteering for a range of interesting placements abroad, from an orphanage in the Dominican Republic to an eye hospital in Jerusalem.

She left the college in July with an Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and is doing a Paramedic Science Degree at Sunderland University.

Susan Errington, the college’s deputy principal, said: “There are some special people who go that extra mile, many of whom have carried a heavy weight themselves.

“Lauren is one of those selfless and outstanding people.

“Lauren joined Derwentside College as it provided her with the support she required, both academically and personally.

“With such a caring nature, Lauren focuses on others, providing support to organisations such as St John’s Ambulance with her even saving a life during the Great North Run.”

The event was attended by journalist and author John McCarthy who was Britain’s longest-held hostage in Lebanon, where he spent five years in captivity before his release in 1991.

Ms Wilkinson was one of 20 students who received an award from Mr McCarthy for their academic excellence.
