There can’t be many more special ways to celebrate the start of a new decade than by welcoming a baby.

And the joy of bringing a new person into the world was felt on New Year's Day by parents in West Cumbria.

It was a busy time for staff at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, with several babies already arriving in 2020.

Joey Lee Curwen was among the first to arrive on January 1 at 5.40pm, to delighted first-time mum, Lauren Curwen, 20, from High Harrington, who was in labour for 15 hours.

He weighed in at 7lbs 4oz and had kept Lauren waiting until the New Year before making his appearance. He had been due to arrive on December 21.

Speaking of the birth, Lauren said: "It wasn't too bad at all. I took a turn for the worse but we are alright now."

She added that the maternity staff had been "absolutely amazing".

Also celebrating on the delivery suite were Natasha Ferguson, 26, and Declan Cullum, of Cleator Moor, who welcomed their baby boy into the world just over four hours later.

Brooklyn Laurence Paul Cullum was born at 10pm, weighing 8lbs exactly. He had not been due to arrive until January 20.

Natasha said: "It was so fast. My waters broke at 8pm and he was here by 10."

Brooklyn is a welcome little brother for Evie May, 6.

Natasha also praised the maternity staff and was grateful that she had been able to give birth at West Cumberland Hospital.

"They were really nice. I don't think I would have made it through to Carlisle. It's good for your family for visiting as well."
