VANDALS have devastated workers at a speedway track after going on a wrecking spree and causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Containers at the Northside track, in Workington, were still smouldering when a dog walker stumbled across the burnt out remains.

Director Andrew Bain said he was ‘absolutely gutted’ following the latest attack and is looking into installing CCTV to prevent any further incidents.

On top of the fire, yobs also ransacked the venue’s cafe, breaking in through a window, stealing a generator and vandalising the office.

“There’s been a lot of heartache down here,” said Mr Bain. “This is the third time in 12 months we’ve been targeted, and I just don’t understand it.”

Mr Bain estimates the damage to cost around £3,000, but this is another blow following on from another.

The previous attack saw copper wiring and generators stolen, with a total of £6,000 worth of damage done to the organisation.

This time paint cans, cement, flagpoles, flood lamps, and even gas cannisters were burnt to ash.

Mr Bain said: “It definitely wasn’t a nice way to start Boxing Day, getting a call at 9.30am to say the container was on fire.

“There are so many people who walk their dogs down here, it’s lucky the roof wasn’t blown off the container and nobody was hurt.”

He added: “We’re a non-profit – everything we make goes straight back into the business, and we have so many kids who come down here regularly with their friends and families, and people just want to ruin it.

“Workington has a big speedway community, we’ve had British champions, even a world champion start off here, so it really is gutting when people want to spoil it for everyone else.”

His 13-year-old daughter Katie spends most of her time helping her dad out at the speedway track, working in the cafe and lending a hand in running the organisation.

Mr Bain said she is just as upset by the events, as he is.

“It’s really sad – so upsetting,” he said. “Katie’s devastated too.

“She works so hard here and spends every weekend down here, just for people to do this. It’s just so sad.”

While Northside Speedway Track currently doesn’t have any security cameras, Mr Bain says he will now have to look into getting some installed to try and halt the spate of attacks.
