A make-or-break meeting next month will decide the final fate of a popular town club.

Now members are being urged to turn up to the Maryport Navy Club AGM and the public is being encouraged to apply for membership so they, too, can show their support.

The club, known especially as a live music venue, has been embroiled in a legal struggle for over two years since the owners of the building, the Maryport Branch of the Royal Naval Association, announced that they wanted to close it down and sell the building with proceeds going to a local charity, probably the sea cadets.

A club spokesman said a show of support was now more important than ever before.

"We need members and we need people to use the club. The uncertainty has had an effect, Whatever happens, we don't want to look back and say apathy killed the club. If people don't turn up they cannot complain about any decisions made," he said.

Existing members are asked to renew their membership before the AGM. Potential members can pick up applications from the club.

The AGM will be held at the Navy Club on South Quay at 7.30pm on February 27.
