Expert artists and complete beginners can learn and experiment together in a new art class in Scotby.

The art class, run by Alex Jakob-Whitworth, develops art skills through experimentation.

Anybody can take part in the classes, regardless of whether they are experts or just getting started.

Alex said: “As children, we happily make marks on paper and don’t stress about the results or what others think.

“Then we grow up and our inner critic takes over.

“We take a new piece of paper and demand of ourselves a masterpiece every time, with all the attendant angst when it doesn’t come off.

“My belief is that if we can rid ourselves of this self-imposed judgement, we can learn more freely, find our own creative voice and, importantly, enjoy ourselves.”

Alex collaborated with the Wordsworth Trust last year for the Being Dorothy project.

The project reflected on the life of Dorothy Wordsworth through writing and artwork.

Alex’s contribution to the project was to recreate Dorothy’s hike up Scafell Pike and then produce artwork inspired by this.

The new art class is held in Scotby Village Hall on Thursdays between 10am-12pm.

It costs £12 per session or £40 for four, and supplies will be provided for beginners
