Quick thinking cyclists helped save Hazel the dog who fell in the harbour.

On Saturday morning the owner of a little terrier dog was searching for her near the harbour in Maryport.

When it happened, Maryport Inshore Rescue Team were training and managed to respond immediately.

A spokesman for the team said: "We were definitely in the right place at the right time on Saturday morning when members came to the rescue of a small dog that had fallen into the harbour.

"Fortunately, a group of cyclists spotted the border terrier, called Hazel, go over the side while her owner was searching the harbour for his missing dog.

"The rescue boat, which was training nearby, was quickly on the scene.

"The little dog swam to the boat, was scooped up by one of the crew and returned to her owner cold and wet but otherwise apparently none the worse for the experience.

"We were pleased the cyclists saw her go in and the team were on hand to rescue her or it could have ended very differently."
