A POPULAR sports club has been chosen as a cause that will be supported by the Co-op – and they have big plans for the money.

Lanercost Sports and Cricket Club is looking to raise money through the local causes fund that will go towards a complete revamp of the current pavilion.

The revamp won’t be happening anytime soon but the Co-op fund would put them on the right foot for making the changes.

Chris Mitchelson, treasurer of the club, said: “We have been lucky enough to be chosen again.

“The club is just growing so fast at the moment, it’s doing really well.”

Mike Mitchelson, chairman of the club added: “Our big project which we’re working on is to build a new clubhouse.

“Within it, we will have separate changing areas for females, for umpires, as well as the two teams that are playing.”

Every time a Co-op member makes a purchase in-store, one per cent of what they spend on Co-op branded products will be donated to the local causes.

At the end of the year, money from carrier bag sales is then distributed between the causes.

This is the second time that the club has been chosen as one of the local causes - previously it raised more than £4,000.

Chris added: “Last time, we used the money for club renovations, changing rooms and toilets need upgrading all the time.

“We’re expanding all the time with the juniors, we introduced a ladies section as well so it’s catering for all of that.”
