RESIDENTS living within the boundaries of Kielder Forest are being encouraged to take advantage of a new dark skies grant.
The £4,000 grant would see dark skies friendly lighting being installed across all of the Northumberland national parks.
Businesses and residents can use the fund to replace or adapt outside lighting that is contributing to light pollution.
Duncan Wise, visitor development and marketing manager at Northumberland national park, said: “We are proud to have such pristine skies here in Northumberland.
“This is a great opportunity for residents and businesses in the park to help conserve our dark skies for the future and install the lighting they need for safety and security.”
This grant project, funded by CLIF Bar, is the first round of conservation taking place in national parks across the UK.
Similar projects have been started in the USA.
Northumberland national dark skies park has brought in more than £25 million of tourism into the region.
Duncan said: “The Northumberland International Dark Skies Park has some of the darkest skies in the country, and shows how much difference good, considerate lighting can make.”
