The Royal British Legion has issued a plea to get veterans involved in celebrations that will mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day.

The group is hoping to replicate the successful celebrations of last year’s D-Day anniversary by bringing together veterans from various branches of the armed forces to commemorate these key dates.

The events take place in May and August and 750 veterans, widows, members of the wartime emergency services, Home Guard, Women’s Land Army and Merchant Services are eligible to get involved.

Tony Parrini, Stanwix branch secretary for the Royal British Legion, said: “The hope is to create a positive experience for the relevant veterans in much the same way as the nation witnessed over the extended D-Day 75 programme in June last year.”

VE Day, which will take place in early May, will commemorate the generation who fought in World War Two with events in London across the bank holiday weekend.

All expenses on the trip to London will be paid for – this includes travel, accommodation, and meals for the duration of the trip.

For VJ Day, which takes place in the middle of August, the Royal British Legion will be holding a couple of different events.

There will be an event held at National Memorial Arboretum on August 15 and the legion will offer support and expenses for that trip too. But, the Royal British Legion will also be collaborating with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League to organise a series of expenses paid tours for veterans of the Asia-Pacific campaigns to commemorative sites.

Anybody who served under the crown in Asia-Pacific during 1939-1945 is eligible to apply to attend these events.

Veterans who wish to attend any of the events can also bring along a family member or a carer.

Their expenses for the trips will also be paid for.
