THOUSANDS of people in Cumbria have been hit with a power cut.

The incident was reported by utility firm Electricity North West yesterday evening, Monday, February 17, just before 7pm.

A spokesman said that 1861 homes had been affected in the Workington area.

He said: “We received reports of a power cut affecting properties in Workington yesterday at 6:47pm due to a fault on the overhead electricity network.

“We responded immediately and remotely restored power to 826 properties in under three minutes.

"A further 905 properties were restored shortly after at 7.15pm and after engineers attended site to make the necessary repairs, the remaining 130 properties were back on supply at 10:46pm.

Yesterday the company also reported 164 homes without power in Grinsdale, a village north of Carlisle, at 3.35pm - however, after despatching engineers to the area it reported that supplies were restored at 3.52pm.
