AN annual cycling sportive in memory of two Cockermouth brothers has been postponed.
This year's Townend Challenge was set to be bigger than ever - to mark the 10th anniversary of their death.
The event is run by friends and family of Christian, 29, and Niggy, 21, Townend who died in a road crash whilst out cycling in 2010.
It was due to take place in May and include an evening of entertainment but the organisers announced yesterday: "Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in line with government guidelines on social distancing, we are having to postpone our event. We hope to be able to give you a new date ASAP (probably in the Autumn)".
Over the years the event has raised more than £70,000 for RoadPeace, a charity for road crash victims and their families. This year the organisers hope to hit the £100,000 mark.
Hundreds of people always turn out for the cycle challenges which are followed by a legendary afternoon tea in Loweswater Village Hall.
Simon Farrell is one of the organisers. "We had organised a great evening do with lots of local businesses donating prizes.
"We hope to announce a new date soon and are hopeful most people will be able to come then," he said.
