MAYOR of Allerdale Hilary Harrington has spoken about the community spirit in her ward during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The councillor for Harrington has taken an active role in a community project to support elderly and vulnerable people who are in isolation.

Coun Harrington has been acting as a logistics officer for the support network, acting as a point of contact for those who may need information or help in the village.

She said: “There are people who haven’t got a laptop, that would be a big problem.

Coun Harrington added that the service is a way to keep in touch with people who may struggle in isolation.

“People there is concern for” she said.

And the mayor has helped to coordinate a contingency plan for local businesses in Harrington. The chemist are working to make medicine available to anyone who needs it despite their situation.

McColls are ensuring that essentials are available whilst changing how they operate to comply with the Government’s social distancing guidelines.

Coun Harrington said: “People are getting the angle of care in the community.”

The service has already benefitted vulnerable people in Harrington: “An elderly lady got in touch, she just wanted to know where she can get a meal from.”

She is concerned for a traveller encampment who may be struggling due to the closure of facilities like public toilets.

“There are children there. I do feel for them. Everybody should be included in care.”

And she believes the situation may yet become more challenging.

“The next three weeks, this is our big challenge.

She showed her support for front line workers and NHS staff.

“It must be terrible for front line workers.”

Coun Harrington believes that social isolation will take its toll for some members of the community.

“It’s keeping people mentally and emotionally well.

“It’s very hard, what do you do with your day? Some people will be in confinement for three months.”
