Nominations are rolling in for our Person of the Week, the News & Star feature that each week shines a spotlight on the someone who has achieved something special.

It might be a milestone in their career or selfless service to the community, or recognition for a simply amazing person who you think deserves recognition.

Andrew Moncrief, 23, has been nominated this week by Chris De Cordova after she encouraged him to take up bellringing and has seen him flourish.

Having autism and other difficulties, Andrew took it in his stride and dedicated himself to his new-found passion.

Dedicated to helping him, Chris said: “He shows more skill than many, many others in what he does.

“In some cases more than people without his difficulties and who have been doing it for far longer than he has.

“It is great watching the sheer pleasure he gets when he successfully rings a new method – there are thousands, and they are very intricate – and already he has a better range than many of those who have been ringing for years.

“He has had difficulties learning to ring bells because of the number of things that have to be done at the same time, a bit like changing gear smoothly when learning to drive, but once we realised that things needed to be broken down into smaller steps, his progress was fast – and he was so keen.

“His memory for facts is amazing and he can tell you how many bells at each cathedral, the weight of the biggest and what key they are in.

“Learning to ring changes seemed impossible at first, because of the complexity of processing three instructions at once and acting on them, having many big jumps from one process to the next.

“We devised an alternative to the traditional learning path and again achieved success at basic change-ringing which is growing, as he builds up new mental patterns to follow.

“Bellringing is now his life and he tries to do it every day, travelling as needed. He has rung at about 50 different churches, so far.”

Chris said of his nomination: “He has no idea and he will be overjoyed. This sort of success is all very new for him.”
