Plans have been revealed for an extension to be built at a Workington church.

Father John Watson has applied to Allerdale council for the extension to be built at Our Lady and St Michael's Church, Banklands.

Plans include a single storey extension to provide accessible and ambulant toilets and facilities and an accessible entrance to replace a small existing single story confessional/store.

The building is Grade II listed and the extension would add around 30 square metres to it.

It would be built using St Bees sandstone.

The catholic church was designed in 1876 by E. W. Pugin and comprises a main worship space, the west entrance or narthex main nave, south and north transepts, sanctuary and sacristies. The body of the church is largely unchanged, except for two extensions: the servers' sacristy was extended in the 1950s and the baptistery chapel of 1948. Next door is the presbytery with the original chapel of 1800.
