POLITICIANS from across the county have expressed their concern for the Prime Minister, who is in intensive care with a confirmed case of coronavirus.

Boris Johnson was on Monday night moved to an intensive care ward at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London, after first being hospitalised the previous day.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said yesterday afternoon that Mr Johnson had been “stable overnight” and is in “good spirits”.

“He is receiving standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance. He has not required mechanical ventilation.”

Figures from across the country and throughout the world have expressed messages of support for the Prime Minister, including his newly-elected Labour Party opposite, Sir Keir Starmer.

Cumbria’s six MPs wished Mr Johnson and his fiancée, Carrie Symonds, well at such a worrying time.

Copeland MP Trudy Harrison, who is also Mr Johnson’s Parliamentary Private Secretary, said: “[I’m] sending my very best wishes to the Prime Minister and fiancee Carrie to find strength and courage to overcome this most terrible virus and get back to running our brilliant country, where you belong and are sorely missed by all.”

Mark Jenkinson, Conservative MP for the neighbouring constituency of Workington, said: “I hope he’s on the mend quickly.

“Workington is rooting for him, I’ve received so many warm comments from well-wishers, he’ll be amazed.”

Penrith and the Border MP Neil Hudson said that his “thoughts and prayers are with the Prime Minister and Carrie and their families at this time. I pray for a full and speedy recovery.

“Thank you so much to all the NHS and allied care workers up and down the country working so hard to keep us safe and well. God be with you Prime Minister.”

Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tom Farron added that he was: “Sending love and best wishes to Boris and Carrie and continuing to hold them in prayer.

“Thank you to all who are caring for those struck by this terrible virus.”

MP for Carlisle, John Stevenson, said: “I, like everyone, wish the Prime Minister a very speedy recovery and our thoughts are with his partner, children, family and friends.

“This is very sobering and is a reminder of the very real risk this virus poses to us all.

“There are many other people in a similar situation here in Cumbria as well as elsewhere and our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this very difficult time.”

Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell said: “Right now, my thoughts are very much with the Prime Minister and his family. I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now.”

He added that the Prime Minster is receiving “the best care.”

“In his temporary absence, the government continues, with a strong team leading our response to this pandemic.

“What this shows is that the virus does not discriminate. Whether you are young, old, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, or someone just going about day-to-day life in these strange times.”
