Founders of the Hungry Caterpillar, Paul and Ashleigh McGee are the Times and Star Trader of the Week, they have been doing their bit to support front-line NHS staff.

The owners of the Hungry Caterpillar who live in Workington have been making and delivering nutritious meals every week for free to front-line NHS workers at the West Cumberland Hospital.

Paul McGee said: "We're probably working more now than we've ever worked."

And their nominee said: “They have been helped by supermarkets donating food that was going out of date and because of this they have managed to cook over 100 meals in two weeks.”

As part of their work to support the Covid-19 relief effort, they have started a Donate a Dinner scheme.

Members of the public who want to say thank you to NHS staff can pay for their meal.

Paul said: "At the end of the day the NHS, they're the front line.

"It's nothing to us, it's just what we do."

The couple opened the first Hungry Caterpillar cafe on Finkle Street, Workington in 2016, since then the brand has snowballed.

Ashleigh and Paul opened Eden, taking the place of The Bounty in September 2019.

The restaurant operates as a cafe during the day and serves the meals and recipes of the Hungry Caterpillar brand.

Further branches opened in Cockermouth in April 2019 and Whitehaven in July 2019.

And they have big plans for the future when normality resumes.

Paul said: "We're on a roll at the minute, we want to franchise them out eventually.

"We're taking it week by week, day by day" he said.

They are continuing to deliver meals despite taking a hit during the nationwide lockdown. Eden operates as a cafe through the day Monday to Saturday with evening meals served on Thursdays and Fridays. It is also hired out for private functions.

"We had every weekend booked up that's had to stop, it's been hit hard like everybody else."
