A man trying to evade capture from Lancashire police has been arrested in Cumbria.

The 46-year-old from Kirkby Stephen remains in custody on suspicion of disqualified driving and police assault.

The cross-county police chase ended with officers in the Eden Valley getting help from the dog unit to get the wanted man off the roads.

It happened yesterday after a pursuit by Lancashire Police had to be called off for safety reasons.

The driver was traced to an address in Brough, where he had abandoned the vehicle and was arrested for multiple offences.

A spokesman for the police said: "A vehicle failed to stop for Lancashire Road Police last night, the pursuit was called off for safety reasons.

"We picked up the vehicle again in Kirkby Stephen by the Proactive Team and the driver made off after abandoning the vehicle in Brough.

"Teamwork with Cumbria roads police and the dog unit traced the driver to an address in Brough and a male was arrested for multiple offences.

"The suspect deliberately coughed at police officers upon arrest.

"It saddens me having to say this, we are all humans and it simply shouldn’t happen.

"We are going to work like anyone else."
