In a new series of features we are asking Town and Reds fans to select their Dream Team or to share memories of a special game. This week Phil Mackay takes on the challenge of his best ever Town XIII.
After seeing many highs and lows in support of Workington Town, it is quite hard to pick a best ever XIII and I have gone with players that I have seen take on the opposition in the blue and white of Town.
There are many more players who came close to getting in and maybe should be there (or would definitely be on the bench) but this is who I went with:
1. Mark Mulligan
A brilliant Full Back who could have went on to play at a much higher level. Who can ever forget the image of him having a cigarette on the side of the pitch at Old Trafford!
2. David Lowden
One of my first memories of the Town was going with my Grandad and as a fellow Flimby man I was an instant fan of David. Great point scorer for the Town. Great influence when he came back to the Amateur game on a personal level.
3. Ken Kerr
A hard as nails Aussie who is my first memory of a top class import at Town. Definite fans favourite in the day.
4. Paul Burns
Vastly under rated and can never remember him having a bad game for Town. Close call with Tony Kay!
5. Des Drummond
Dessie flying down the wing and every now and again hitting someone so hard they didn’t know where they were!
6. Wayne Kitchin
Brilliant player had every skill in the game.
7. Dean Marwood
Great memories of Dean at Old Trafford. For his size an unbelievably brave player.
8. James Pickering
To me the best player I have ever seen play for Town. Lovely man as well.
9. Phil McKenzie
Brought a touch of class to Town and guided the team through a great era.
10. Colin ‘Buck’ Armstrong
Town legend, great captain, led from the front in any game I ever seen.
11. Brad Hepi
As a Carlisle player took some flak from the Town fans but an instant favourite when he came to us.
12. Stephen Holgate
Very rarely seen him do anything wrong on a rugby field. Solid in attack and defence and a great player to have in your team.
13. Martin Oglanby
Another local favourite. Outstanding in the Premiership winning season and never left anything on the pitch.
