GARDENING equipment and electric fans from a cannabis farm have been donated to community groups.

Police in Consett discovered more than 450 cannabis plants after executing a warrant in the town centre on Friday afternoon.

As well as seizing the plants, fans, fertiliser and some furniture were also removed.

These have now been donated to Kaydar, a residential care home for adults with disabilities in Shotley Bridge; Brockwell Court Care Home; the YMCA, in Consett; Dixon Street Allotment Association; Chester Road Allotment Association and Constance Street Allotment Association.

Sergeant Jamie Gray said: "We're grateful for the information from the community relating to the supply and production of drugs. It has been nice that we have been able to give something back.

“Drugs can have a devastating effect on communities, so it is very important that we close cannabis farms like this one down.”

An investigation is underway to establish the identity of those involved in the cannabis farm.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101.
