A porpoise and calf have been spotted off Whitehaven pier.

Lee John Coan, 39, and his eight-year-old son Ijay Coan were fishing off the pier at 5am on Wednesday morning when they noticed the mother and calf swimming close by.

Lee, from Kells, said: "We just watched them, it was quite nice to watch. I had my little fella with me and he was just ecstatic.

"He thought they were dolphins. They were running along the pier wall, they came in quite close."

He said he has been fishing since he was six-years-old and has never seen a porpoise at the pier. Though he has seen them at Parton and Braystones beaches.

Lee added that porpoises tended to keep a low profile, so it was quite unusual to see them.

The mother and calf stayed near the pier for two hours.
