CARLISLE will get a £1m boost as part of the Government's 'New Deal' to stimulate jobs and economic growth.

The money can be used to for projects which should be delivered before April 2021.

To access the money Carlisle City Council has until August 14 to to come up with proposals for the funding.

The government is encouraging projects including improvement to parks, green spaces, sustainable transport links and town centres.

Council leader Councillor John Mallinson said: “We’re delighted that yet again the government has provided funding to Carlisle.

"We’ve had a lot of support for the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, St Cuthbert’s Garden Village, the Southern Link Road, the Future High Streets Fund and also the Towns Deal.

"We will now assess how best to use the funding and will respond to the government before the deadline.”
