It’s that time of the week, where we at the Whitehaven News once again name the people who have played their brilliant part for the good of the community.

With friends, neighbours, colleagues and strangers continuing to support one another endlessly through the pandemic, there are still so many people who need their moment in the spotlight.

And the caring crew at Copeland Age and Advice Service are certainly worthy of this week’s applause, with the team being named our People of the Week.

The group, made up by Becky Goddard, Lesley Amor, Emma Barwise, Claire Hines and Kara Carter, have remained devoted to their work during the difficult time of coronavirus, continuing to offer vital advice and support to Copeland’s over 55s.

On top of their day-to-day work, such as helping the elderly and vulnerable with finances, independent living and housing options, the borough’s very own superhero squad have kept everyone busy with their anti-boredom packs, which include puzzles, colouring books, games and even a Rubik’s cube or two, as well as offering a telephone befriending scheme, and keeping everyone supported through their Facebook page.

The person behind CAAS’s nomination said: “I believe these women deserve a round of applause for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.

“They have gone above and beyond what their daily work is, and are making sure to keep the spirits of these people up as well as regularly posting on their Facebook with information.”

But it's not a difficult feat for the fabulous five, who do the job because they simply adore it.

"I'm absolutely delighted someone nominated us!" team member Becky said.

"It's a massive shock, but we're just so delighted. It was Lesley's idea to set CAAS up, and we've worked our little socks off to get funding and support and everything, so we're really pleased with how it's all going."

The service has offered a lifeline to many throughout the borough since its launch in October last year, and Becky is over the moon to know the group is making a difference.

She said: "It's such a rewarding job – you meet really lovely people, everyone's got a story to tell and is really grateful for your help.

"We do it because we just love it, and we want to make sure nobody's missed out, and they can keep living safely and independently if that's what makes them happy."

Help us to spread some joy across Copeland by sending in your nominations, with details of where they’re from, what they do, and why they deserve a round of applause, to emma.walker@newsquest.co.uk.
