A COUNTY project which celebrates dark skies and highlights the impact of light pollution is hoping Cockermouth will take part in a pilot scheme.

The Cumbria Dark Skies Project is running a Lighting Audit and Action Plan (LAAP) and has asked Cockermouth town council if it would like to be the small town pilot.

The three main aims of the project are: to celebrate and raise awareness of the value of dark skies and impacts of light pollution; prevent more light pollution; and reduce existing levels of light pollution.

The purpose of the LAAP is to provide a baseline assessment of external lighting, identify the main contributors to pollution and identify priority actions to mitigate the effects of obtrusive light.

Town councillors will discuss the project at an online meeting tonight.
