FANS are set to see a different football club having supported their team through an “unknown” period.

Workington Reds Amateur Football Club launched an appeal to Save Shankly’s Reds in July. The fundraising campaign called on Workington Reds and Liverpool FC fans to support the club during a period of jeopardy brought on by the financial hardship of the coronavirus.

Both clubs were once helmed by the legendary manager Bill Shankly and Workington Reds called-on this common bond to see them through the pandemic.

The Save Shankly’s Reds appeal alone has received £14,212 on Crowdfunder. Supporters can give the fundraiser one final push before it closes on Monday.

The appeal to their fellow Reds followed a fundraising livestream which recreated the team’s most famous clash, against Manchester United in 1958.

Over the course of the summer, the side has raised almost £50,000 to secure its future.

Club chairman Les Byers said: “We are sincerely grateful for everyone’s efforts over the summer. We started out in a very strange and unknown situation.

Mr Byers said: “It supports our future going forward.

“We can go forward in a new found confidence.”

Fundraising was aimed at supporting the club in covering overheads as behind closed doors play following the coronavirus pandemic poses a financial challenge.

“Fundraising was for every facet of the club.”

Over £6,000 in pitch improvements have been made to Borough Park, ensuring that it the club ground looks its best when it is safe for fans to return.

Mr Byers said: “The pitch is in the best condition it’s been in for a number of years and we’re hoping everyone will be surprised at how Borough Park looks at the start of the season. I’ve like to thank the grounds staff including groundsman Dennis Rossi who have put in a tremendous effort to reach this excellent standard.”

Safety is the highest priority for the club, Mr Byers said: “We’ve recently completed all our risk assessments to make sure, when our fans return, the grounds are safe.

“The club is now enthusiastically looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Borough Park.”
