Two homes were struck by lightning, as a huge storm hit the county.

Firefighters were called several times during the night to incidents, as sheets of lightning lit up the skies.

In Workington, crews were called twice in the early hours of the morning to separate incidents.

The first, in Grasmere Avenue, saw a street light hit by lightning.

Firefighters checked it to ensure it was safe, but took no further action.

They were then called again to Mossbay Road, after a house was struck.

A fire spokesman said there was smoke and damage to the bathroom, and the utilities were isolated.

It was not just west Cumbria which experienced the storm however, with a home in Wreay, near Carlisle, also hit.

Carlisle East and West fire stations both responded to the 999 call at about 2.45am, although the west crew was not needed in the end.

Both the telephone and electricity lines to the property were damaged and there was smoke in the hallway, said a fire spokesman.

Firefighters were on scene for about 30 minutes.
