Residents are being asked for their views on dog fouling as the council looks at measures to tackle the problem.

Allerdale council has launched a consultation into the introduction of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).

A PSPO allows the council to issue fixed penalty notices against people who fail to clean up after their dog.

Councillor Tony Markley, executive member for environmental services, said: “We know how important having clean streets and communities are to residents right across the borough and as a council we take our role very seriously.

“Dog fouling is a common complaint from residents and our teams work hard to not just to clean it up but to fine those who allow their pets to foul without clearing it away. If you want to help us continue to do this then please provide us with your feedback.”

The consultation began yesterday and will end on August 26.

A PSPO is already in place in the borough, however it expires on October 20 and a fresh one is needed, accompanied by evidence to support why it is needed.

The council is looking for information from respondents about where in the borough they live, whether they think dog fouling has a detrimental effect on their community, if it has a direct impact on their day-to-day life and if they think dog fouling is increasing or decreasing in their area.

It is essential that any order includes exemptions for those who are unable to clean up after their dog so the council would also like comments with regards to whether there are any instances in which an exemption can be made.

Incidents of dog fouling can be reported through the myAllerdale mobile app or through the ‘report it’ section of the council’s website.
