A 42-year-old thief who stole a man’s wallet in Carlisle has been jailed for 80 days.

The city’s Rickergate court heard that John Anthony Lowe committed the offence on July 17.

He initially denied the theft but then changed his plea to guilty.

At the time of the offence, Lowe - whose address was given in court as Durham Prison - was under post-sentence supervision by the Probation Service.

When released he must pay a £128 victim surcharge.

District Judge Gerald Chalk said the offence warranted prison because there had been a breach of trust and because of the defendant’s criminal record.
