THERE’S been a surge of wild campers in the Lake District, say The National Trust.
The landowning charity that looks after some of the county’s most historic areas has issued updated guidance on camping.
A spokesman for the organisation said: “There’s a long tradition of wild camping in the Lake District and the National Trust has always acknowledged this activity can take place as long as it’s within recognised guidelines.
“In 2020, we’re seeing a surge in people wanting to camp.
“We really want visitors to have a wonderful experience so it’s important to know the difference between illegal fly camping and acceptable wild camping.”
Guidance includes staying above “the highest fell wall” approximately, 1200 feet, being a champion of “leaving no trace”, not lighting fires plus a number of others.
