A group of students at a west Cumbrian school were sent home after a pupil was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Netherhall School in Maryport said it had a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19 and children in Year 11 were sent home after lunch.

Headteacher David Tromans said: "It's happened, like it has in many other schools in Cumbria and up and down the country.

"Year 11 students are now self-isolating for the next 10 days.

"I've asked parents to be vigilant and make sure their child doesn't exhibit any symptoms and if they do to get them tested and keep us informed.

"We've opened up a good dialogue with parents to make sure we know what's happening."

The Year 11 student who tested positive was not displaying any symptoms.

In a statement published on the school's Facebook page, Mr Tromans said: "Unfortunately, we have a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19 in Year 11 and although the person concerned shows no signs of infection, it is better to err on the side of caution and for all year 11 student in this ‘bubble’ to be sent home, until we have a further diagnosis to confirm / unconfirm the initial result.

"Year 11 students will be sent home directly after lunch, after contact with parents and I will be in touch with parents/guardians shortly with updated information as I have it.

"In the meantime, Year 11 students will receive remote learning from their teachers."
