Developers behind plans to turn a Grade II listed building into flats have told planners they were wrong to deny permission to demolish a wall.

Adrian Murray, of Murray Property Developments, applied to Allerdale council to turn The Wordsworth Hotel on Main Street in Cockermouth into eight flats.

Permission for the project was granted earlier this year, however a request to demolish part of a wall to create a pedestrian and vehicle access was turned down by Allerdale council's planners.

The reason for refusal was due to concerns about the junction between the proposed lane and South Street, which is considered substandard and with poor visibility.

Now Mr Murray has resubmitted the plans and documents presented to the council, say the planning authority was wrong in denying permission.

Papers presented say: "Having reconsidered planning legislation and taken further advice, the applicant considers that Allerdale council have made an error in requesting a change in description on [the application] and then refusing the application."

It adds the proposal to create an access should not require permission under planning law, just the demolition of the wall, which planners supported.

A decision is expected to be made soon.
