THERE are few things better than tucking into a juicy steak with freshly cooked chips or fries.
Whether it’s an occasional treat, or you’re a committed carnivore - there are plenty of places in west Cumbria to get a meaty mouthful.
This week we asked readers of the Times & Star to give us their recommendations including pubs, butchers and restaurants.
So whatever way you like your steak, well-done medium-rare or even blue, here are some recommendations, in no particular order, of the best places.
1 THE OLD GINN HOUSE INN, MOOR ROAD, GREAT CLIFTON
A number of readers have raved about the steak and chips at the bar and restaurant near Workington, including Vanessa Done and Sarah Souter Barber
Sarah posted: “The Old Ginn house is absolutely lush.”
The eatery has a number of glowing reviews on Tripadvisor.
One customer said: "The food is excellent and the staff are very polite and attentive.
"Our waitresses were very cheerful and helpful."
2 THOMASONS BUTCHERS & DELI, STATION STREET, KESWICK
Reader Newtown T Rambone said: "Their rib eye steak cut at least one inch thick, basted in thyme, rosemary and garlic butter, and Yukon Gold Potatoes oven baked fries.
"Nothing can beat it."
3 MARSHALL’S BUTCHERS, CORPORATION ROAD, WORKINGTON
A number of readers have waxed lyrical about the steaks on offer at the shop including Eve McVennon, Lynne Blinco, Marg McDonald and Stephanie Freware.
Stephanie said: “Marshall’s butchers, Workington - top quality products.
“Brilliant service during lockdown, pleasant staff.”
Graeme Gaunt said: "Marshall's, T bone and rib eye steaks, superb - try the dry cured bacon."
4 BLOCKS STEAKHOUSE, MARKET PLACE, COCKERMOUTH
Reader Stephanie Gate highly recommends the restaurant for the perfect steak and chips.
5 TONY HARRISON BUTCHERS, MAIN STREET COCKERMOUTH
Tara Moore is a fan of the butchers shop in the town centre adding: "Their rib eye steak rocks.”
6 HAIGHS BUTCHERS, POW STREET, WORKINGTON
The shop, also with a branch in Whitehaven, comes highly recommended by Marilyn Allison.
7 ROYAL GEORGE INN, CROSS HILL, WORKINGTON
The steak and chips at the inn are recommended by reader Karen Blair.
8 THIN WHITE DUKE, DEVONSHIRE STREET, CARLISLE
The bar gets a thumbs up from Maureen Pearson who heartily recommends its Flat Iron Steak with sauté mushrooms, roast tomatoes and hand cut chips.
9 THE LAKESIDE RESTAURANT, BRAYTON PARK, ASPATRIA
Reader Craig Wilkinson said it was "definitely the best".
