A HOMELESS man has been jailed after he spat at a police officer.
Lewis Frederick Brown appeared before Workington's magistrates' court on Friday charged with assaulting PC2798 Maddox by beating.
He admitted the offence, which took place on October 14 in Workington.
The 37-year-old was jailed for 60 days.
The court directed that the sentence was so severe as it involved Brown spitting at the officer during a pandemic, which could have put his health at risk.
His "poor record" was also noted by magistrates.
Brown must pay compensation on his release from prison.
He was not ordered to pay any other court costs, magistrates ruled.
Brown was represented during the court hearing by defence solicitor Sean Harkin.
