A new family business has adapted to the changes brought on by coronavirus and the owners have high hopes for the future beyond lockdown.

Jeremy Pearson has been running The Bate Box in Distington since August 2019 with help from his wife Jessica.

Although the business has seen its challenges during the pandemic, they are happy to have the community on their side.

Jeremy said: “I’ve found that people have been extremely supportive.

“I ran a free school meals scheme during half term and the public really got behind it.”

The Bate Box is based on the village's Main Street and under new Covid-19 guidance, it is allowed to remain open for collections during lockdown.

“I think we’re going to see a continued rise in trade. Since we’ve reopened we’ve picked up a new loyal base of customers," he added.

It is a difficult time for businesses like The Bate Box.

Jeremy said: “We had to do the difficult thing of letting go of our staff which was quite upsetting.”

However, the team were happy to learn that they can stay open during the second national lockdown.

In a post to their customers, they said: “Following an unannounced visit by environmental health regarding Covid-19 procedures within the shop, I am happy to announce they are satisfied with what is in place.

“They have also confirmed that we are able to remain open throughout lockdown to serve the community.”

As well as collections from the shop, The Bate Box’s meals can be ordered for delivery.

Hot pot, savoury lunches, hot drinks and a range of delicious cakes are available.

Owner Jeremy is originally from Hampshire but he now lives in Broughton Moor.

The business’ nominator said: “Well done, keep up your good work and stay safe.”

Another happy customer said: “Thank you Jeremy you never cease to amaze us how you have taken this village to your heart.

"A kind generous person who during the last few months has not had it easy. We will always be here to support you.”
