Readers praised the work of Julie Carruthers and her staff who have gone above and beyond to maintain a family business during the pandemic.

Fearon Flowers, based on Harrington Road, Workington has made headlines for the staff’s resilience during a difficult time for independent family businesses.

Julie’s customers were not surprised to hear that she and her staff have gone above and beyond.

In response to the well wishes, Julie said: “We couldn’t do it without our committed, hard working staff, it’s not an easy occupation at the best of times.” Fearon Flowers, which was founded by Julie's great grandfather, was made the Times & Star’s Trader of the Week for its resilience despite feeling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and changes to trading after Brexit.

Operating deliveries during periods where non-essential shops were required to close has actually gotten the word out about Fearon Flowers amongst the public.

Julie said: “We’ve had a lot of new customers during the lockdowns, people who were delighted that they could have flowers delivered.”

The team were able to reopen for a time between the first two national lockdowns but since new restrictions came into force, they have reverted back to offering contactless deliveries.
