There will be a Viking presence in Aspatria once more, if planning permission can be obtained.

The town council has applied for permission to erect the Viking boat, as a floral planter, in the centre of the town at the entrance to the Queen Street car park.As well as needing planning permission from Allerdale council, the town council would also need permission to use Allerdale land for the ship.

If permission was given this would be the third iconic planter in the town representing various parts of its history.

At one entrance is a milk churn representing dairy farming and the town's large creamery. At the other end is a coal trolley in honour of Aspatria's coal industry.

In the early 2000s there were plans to build a Viking village just outside of the town but that fell through when the financial recession meant development money was no longer available.

This planter will not replace the grand scheme but will mark the town's Viking heritage.
