All around Seaton hearts are springing up around the village, to lift the spirits of residents.

In the build up to Valentine's day crocheted designs have been spotted on postboxes near to the shops, with the prospect of more hearts to come.

It builds on the success of the Christmas 'fence hats' where tiny crocheted and knitted hats warmed the ends of each of the fence posts outside Firth House - sheltered housing for people aged 55 and above, drawing smiles from residents inside and outside of the housing as people saw them.

On Monday, 10 children from Happy Hours private day nursery joined the happy heart drive by hanging their crocheted hearts on Firth House fence.

Laura Porter, who works with the pre-school children at Happy Hours day nursery, said: "They all really enjoyed hanging their hearts on the fence on Monday.

"We have a display up in our pre-school window and we explained it was to brighten up everyone's spirits. They took a heart each and we went along to the fence.

"The hearts were crocheted for them by Lorraine Stamper, the owner of the nursery and Victoria Brown - the overall manager.

"They had seen the idea on Facebook by others in the village."

Laura said they children had spotted a resident in Firth House looking out from her window and had waved, they were all delighted when she waved back.

Laura said that she has been working with Kellie Reid and all the children at the nursery to make heart bunting, which will be put up on the front of the nursery.

All the children got involved in this, including babies, toddlers and pre-school children. The children decided what patterns they would decorate their card hearts with, choosing from finger painting, collage or stickers, then the artwork was laminated to protect it from the elements, before being threaded onto the bunting.
