Students of a Workington secondary school competed in a maths challenge event that featured teams from across the North West of the county.

St Joseph’s Catholic High School hosted the Math’s Feast for Cumbria North on Tuesday March 30 with 15 teams of students taking part.

The challenge for year 10 students was designed to be both fun and educational, testing problem solving skills, critical thinking and the ability to work as a team.

Teams of four each took on a feast of mathematical challenges.

Jenny Gatley, Director of Maths at St Josephs and an AMSP Associate said: “They have altered the set-up for Maths feasts this year in the light of the changing situation we find ourselves in and it is all done online.”

Challenges were split up into rounds with different skills and strategies required to be successful in each one.

Each event takes between two and three hours and awards were given for good teamwork and for the winning team of each round. 4 rounds in total.

Two teams were entered from St Joes, a group of boys and a group of girls. They jointly won round three, with the girls making the runner-up spot in round four.

It was a major achievement on a competitive playing field.

Ulverston Victoria High School were the overall winners.

The Advanced Maths Program change the format and content of the Maths Feast competition every year to keep the challenges exciting and engaging.

Content from the curriculum is used in engaging challenges.

One student said: “The best round was the relay, I enjoyed the pace and structure of it!”

Another year 10 student said: “All our students very much enjoyed working in teams and the competitive atmosphere.”

A spokesperson for St Joseph’s has said that the school is hoping to be the host of Maths Feast again next year.
