Professional oven cleaner Jamie Watson, can't wait to roll his sleeves up and get dirty now that lockdown restrictions are easing.

Jamie, 27, is Penrith based and owns the franchise to 'Oven Wizards Cumbria' , covering most of the county, from Carlisle to Kendal, Keswick to Windermere and across to Alston.

He was previously a chef and as he was already familiar with many ovens and knew how they should look, it was an easy progression for him.

He has had the business for two years and has managed to involve mum Mandy Watson in the bookings side.

Mandy is perfectly placed to do this after gaining years of experience in her own business, running Pooley Bridge Post Office, which was in her family for 56 years.

Now that she has sold her own business, Mandy can help out. She said that the timing of taking on the franchise was not the best, as Covid hit in the early days, and being newly self-employed, he didn't qualify for any financial help. Jamie had just taken on a mortgage at the time, so needed some help from "bank of mum and dad."

The business is bouncing back busier than ever now. They have received many bookings recently from holiday cottages and tenanted properties, as owners prepare to rent them out again. There have also been bookings for people thinking of moving house.

Mandy said: "This week we are fully booked, we have a few regulars that book every six months or so, but people tend to leave it until a week in advance. Our clientele tends to be elderly and work has picked up now that people are getting their vaccinations."

Jamie has a dip tank and takes off as much of the metal racks, sides and glass from the oven as possible, leaving them in the tank for an hour while he attacks the rest of the oven, then puts it all back and polishes up the brass. For a single oven it is £45. The chemicals are biodegradeable and don't smell and are far stronger than shop bought ones.
