Some things don’t change – and local sport is one of them.
Today we have been dusting off the archives from the 1970s and uncovered a selection of pictures showing local football, cricket and rugby union teams from 50 years ago.
The Pirelli factory in Carlisle had held a works football tournament and the boys from the admin department came out on top beating the engineering division representatives.
Meanwhile the Carlisle Spartans team defeated Whitehaven’s Mirehouse in the final of the Lonsdale Cup.
And while we’re on achievements – hats off to the young lads who played for Morton School’s under 13 team. They had won the Cumberland Schools FA under 13 knock-out competition for the fourth year in succession. Did any of them to great things in the football world?
Do you recognise anyone in this week’s hall of fame? Let us have your memories of playing sport in the seventies.
