A DJ who started her career here in Cumbria is set to take over one of Annie Mac's Radio 1 shows.

The news comes as long-serving presenter Annie Mac has announced she is leaving BBC Radio 1 after 17 years, amid several line-up changes at the station.

The DJ, 42, confirmed her departure on Tuesday, telling listeners her job at the broadcaster has been like a 'second home', as Clara Amfo has been revealed as her replacement on BBC Radio 1's flagship music show, Radio 1's Future Sounds.

Sarah Story, from Carlisle, will front the Friday night 8 to 10pm slot to present Radio 1 Future Dance.

Sarah started her broadcasting career at the age of 16 co-presenting Saturday morning breakfast on CFM.

During her years she has presented many shows including Capital FM, including Capital Breakfast and Drivetime shows across the UK as well as hosting the Capital Weekender with Ministry of Sound on the Capital Network every Friday and Saturday night 10pm from Leicester Square in London.

Sarah said: "I'm so excited to join the Radio 1 family on Friday nights with a brand new show, Future Dance!

"Friday nights on Radio 1 are iconic and they have not only influenced me as a broadcaster but as a music lover. It's an honour to be able to showcase the incredible dance music talent that we have coming through and I cannot wait to get started."

Annie Mac joined BBC Radio 1 as an assistant producer before hosting her first show on the station in 2004. Annie has since fronted some iconic moments on Radio 1, from live sessions to landmark interviews with the biggest acts on the planet.

Speaking about her departure, she said: "After 17 wonderful years I have decided it’s time to leave Radio 1.

"This second home has been the thread that has run through nearly my whole adult life; I have grown up, fallen in and out of love, moved homes, climbed up the career ladder, got married and become a mother twice over.

"I have done this alongside you, my listeners, who have done your own versions of the same. I will be forever grateful to you all for welcoming me into your days.

"I have never not walked out of the studio feeling lighter and happier than when I walked in and that is all down to you.

"Working at Radio 1 has been like being at the best party ever and it is a wonderful feeling to be leaving with a huge smile on my face. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!"

Clara Amfo has been named as the new host of BBC Radio 1’s flagship new music show, Radio 1’s Future Sounds (Monday to Thursday, 6pm to 8pm), with Rickie, Melvin and Charlie to take on Radio 1’s iconic Live Lounge show from Monday to Thursday, 10.30am to 12.45pm.

The changes on BBC Radio 1 will take place in September.
