A HOME Bakery business in Aspatria has grown from strength to strength during the Covid-19 pandemic, helping its owner to bounce back from a challenging situation.

Lucy Bedford of Aspatria launched Delicious Doughnuts and Delights from home in February as a pivot after her workplace closed during the Covid-19 pandemic

Lucy said: “Due to Covid I lost my job, I worked at the Craggs Coffee Shop, they closed due to Coronavirus.

“It was my auntie who gave me the idea of starting something up. It started with donuts and cup cakes but my son sent me a link to a video of a cookie pie and I started doing that as well.”

Ideas for new bakes often come from Lucy’s friends and family.

The business has been a lifeline for the home baker while the cafe was closed and a period of worrying.

Lucy said: “January was difficult, it’s always difficult for people after Christmas but you’ve lost your job, you’re missing that income, it’s a big hit.”

“I tried applying for various jobs but with the kids at home I wanted to find something that fit around them, it was hard.”

The home bakery business, with orders being taken online and over the phone, was the perfect fit.

“I can be here for them when they’re doing their school work.”

Although Lucy is currently her own boss at Delicious Doughnuts and Delights she is unsure if it will be her full time job in the future.

“I didn’t expect it to be as busy as it has been. I’m going to wait and see. The Craggs opens again in May I think. If I can’t juggle everything, this is going to come first I think. I am going to look at maybe opening a shop in the future. My youngest, she’s two, I think when she starts nursery a shop’s going to be on the cards.”

The business has become Lucy’s passion project.

“I’m proud of myself. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far. It’s mine, I’m doing what I want to do.

Lucy said: “It’s helped me out massively, mentally and financially.”

Delicious Donuts and Delights are selling edible cookie dough, cheesecake filled chocolate eggs, afternoon teas and platters both sweet and savoury.
