PLANS to boost Workington's tourism industry by relocating a popular caravan site have been updated.

In February, proposals were put before Allerdale Borough Council involving the relocation of the CL Caravan and Camping site from the larger Gale Brow site to a location across the road.

New amended plans include a vision to build a bridge over a stream that runs adjacent to Winscales Road as part of the proposed new site opposite the former Gale Brow Pet Business.

The existing lodge on the former site would be demolished as part of the plans.

Alongside neighbouring councils, Allerdale Borough Council announced this year its tourism strategy, which endeavours to attract tourists to the west of Cumbria.

In this vein, the applicant noted: “We base the application upon the fact that the current CL site is a busy location serving tourists coming in to West Cumbria to the Western Lakes catering for both caravans and campers.

“The proposed relocation is because the larger site has been sold and is the subject of a current planning application to convert the site into a holiday lodge park.”

The plans outline a desire from the owners to utilise as much of the site's existing infrastructure.

The old existing access to the former pet crematorium site would also be reused.

The vision for the site is expected to include the building of a lodge which would be used in the general running of the site alongside an onsite fruit orchard.

Plans for the lodge would have to be agreed with the local planning authority subsequently.

The Camping and Caravan Club has confirmed that the current licence in place and valid for the existing site could be transferred across the road to the new site.

They added that a temporary lodge was required for the safe running of the new site.

A statement from the club said: “The proposal represents a valid reason for the change of use of the brownfield site as described for the use which is based upon the tourism details already set out in the Local Plan.”
